Energy use per capita vs. "standard of living"

Graph from the Franklin Institute: Great analysis of energy usage versus "Standard of Living" (as measured by the United Nations' "Human Development Index").
A true analysis of this graph would begin with an analysis of the HDI to determine whether it is a good measure of "standard of living" or not. I don't have the time at the moment do to so, but think the graph indicates a very interesting trend. It would appear that even though the U.S. uses more energy per capita than Japan (WHAT? I thought they were even more into electronic gadgets than us!), our HDI is virtually identical.
It's also a little shocking to see that Canada actually uses more energy per capita than the U.S.
